Guide to Dry Fasting

  • Dry fasting (no food and no water) is the most intense biblical fast — see Esther 4:16 and Acts 9:9.
  • Never exceed 3 days dry. After 3 days, transition to a water or Daniel fast.
  • Do NOT dry fast if pregnant, nursing, diabetic, on medication, underweight, or under 18.
  • Spend the time you would eat in prayer, worship and the Word — fasting without prayer is just hunger.
  • Break a dry fast slowly with warm water, then a small piece of fruit after 1–2 hours.

Foods to Eat After Fasting

  • Hour 0 — Warm water with lemon (small sips).
  • Hour 1 — Fresh fruit: watermelon, papaya, orange or grapes.
  • Hour 3 — Vegetable broth or coconut water.
  • Hour 6 — Steamed vegetables, light soup, or smoothie.
  • Day 2 — Yogurt, eggs, oatmeal, soft cooked grains.
  • Day 3+ — Resume normal meals. Avoid heavy meat, fried food, sugar and processed foods for the first 48 hours.

How to Fast

  • Set a clear spiritual goal before you begin (Isaiah 58).
  • Choose your fast type and duration based on your strength and calling.
  • Replace meal times with prayer, scripture and worship.
  • Keep a journal — record what God says.
  • Stay hydrated (unless dry fasting), rest more, and reduce screen time.
  • Break the fast slowly. Reintroduce food gently.
  • End with thanksgiving and obedience to whatever God instructed.
